Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about filings I submit on your behalf.
What is the difference between a USDOT number and an MC number?
A USDOT number identifies your company for safety and compliance monitoring. An MC number (operating authority) is generally required for for-hire interstate carriers. Many new interstate carriers need both. I prepare and submit both filings on your behalf when your operation requires them.
Are you part of the FMCSA or USDOT?
No. Start Truck Authority is my independent third-party filing service. I personally prepare and submit registrations on your behalf. Carriers can always file directly with the government; I exist to do the paperwork in your place.
How long does authority take?
I prepare and submit paperwork promptly, but government agencies control review, protest periods, insurance and BOC-3 prerequisites, and activation.
Do I need a truck before I apply?
Often you can start filings before you own or lease a truck. Insurance filings and a BOC-3 are still typically required before authority becomes active. During intake I map which filings I will submit for your situation.
Are government fees included in your prices?
Unless a package expressly says otherwise, listed service prices (when published) cover my filing work only. State and federal government fees are separate and paid to the agency or required vendor.
Which states do you support?
I file for carriers across all 50 U.S. states. Some permits and plates are state-specific (for example certain NY, NM, KY, or OR programs). Tell me where you base and run, and I prepare the filings that apply.
Do you file the paperwork for me, or only advise me?
I file. I am the sole owner of Start Truck Authority: I personally prepare and submit the registrations and renewals you hire me for, on your behalf and in your place—not a DIY coaching product, and not a handoff to a call center.
What is Motus and do you work with it?
Motus is USDOT's registration system used for many FMCSA registration actions. Where filings go through Motus, I prepare and submit on your behalf through the proper channels. Required identity verification still must be completed by an authorized company official.
